Beat the Heat Partners Have all the Fun

Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Since its inception, the SLV Beat the Heat BBQ has grown into a 2 day event that boasts a lineup of activities and entertainment with something for everyone. This #CompetitionBBQ has grown to include a Cornhole Tournament, the HogWaller Mud Run, a Hot Pepper Chow Down, and yard games for all ages. Each of these awesome additions are made possible by our amazing community partners.

The Alamosa Chamber of Commerce has kept the beer flowing for BBQ lovers and cook teams alike by hosting the Beer Garden. In partnership with the San Luis Valley Brewing Company, the Chamber organizes and staffs the Beer Garden, because really- what goes better with BBQ than Beer? This year the Chamber has stepped up the fun factor by bringing even more yard games to the BBQ- look for a giant Connect Four courtesy of the Chamber!

The Beer Garden is open on Friday from 3pm to 9pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Hogwaller Mud Run was dreamt up with visions of natural obstacles in a mud run befitting our own Rio Grande. SLV Sports & Wellness organizes this crazy fun mud run along the river and adds new obstacles each year- like the giant slip n slide finish! The race uses RFID timing chips that are attached to runners shoes and provide highly accurate results. The run is open to all ages so it’s tons of fun for the whole family! A portion of the proceeds benefit a local nonprofit each year and this year’s recipient will be SLV GO! The race kicks off Saturday activities at 10 am. SLV Sports & Wellness invites you to play like a pig so you can eat like one.

The team at Del Mar Carpet One got involved with the BBQ by hosting the Del Mar Carpet One Hot Pepper Chow Down. This hot pepper eating contest pits competitors against each other on the main stage of the event to see who can take the heat. Contestants start with jalapenos and go all the way to ghost peppers. The Chow Down is free to enter and the team from Del Mar Carpet One takes donations throughout the competition. These proceeds are donated to a local charity every year. Past beneficiaries include Building for America’s Bravest and Hometown Hero Kitchen Remodel giveaway. The Hot Pepper Chow Down starts at 1 pm on the stage. If you're not up to the challenge, it's a blast to watch.

A few years ago the Beat the Heat Team wanted to bring the back yard games to a whole new level so we partnered with Square Peg Brewerks to add the Beat the Heat Cornhole Tournament. Square Peg sponsored the game, and the Friday night tournament has since grown into a lively must-attend element of the event. Register for the tournament by 5:30, start time is 6:00 pm. The crew at SquarePeg didn’t stop at Cornhole, this year they are hosting a BeerFest style Craft Beer Tasting! The Craft Beer Tasting will take place Saturday from 2 pm – 4 pm. Your ticket gets you a sample cup and unlimited samples for TWO hours!! Follow the BBQ on Facebook for all the latest news!

We invite you to come hang out and enjoy everything these amazing partners have put together for the community! The #BeattheHeatBBQ Team can’t imagine this event without the incredible support the Alamosa Chamber of Commerce, Del Mar Carpet One, SLV Sports & Wellness and Square Peg Brewerks! They make this event so much fun and we can't thank them enough!
